Tragic Event Leaves Community in Shock

Man Identified as Chet Bohrer of Salt Lake County, Utah

BERKELEY, Calif. (CBS San Francisco) -- The University of California, Berkeley police are investigating an incident in which a man set himself on fire on campus Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

According to local news outlet Berkeley Scanner, the man, identified as Chet Bohrer of Salt Lake County, Utah, died from his injuries. Police confirmed that Bohrer was experiencing a severe mental health episode at the time of the incident.

"This is a tragic event that has deeply saddened our community," said UC Berkeley Police Chief Margo Bennett. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Bohrer's family and friends during this difficult time."

The incident occurred at around 6:03 p.m. PST on Sproul Plaza, a busy area of campus. Witnesses reported seeing Bohrer pour a flammable liquid on himself and then set himself on fire.

Campus police and emergency medical services responded quickly and attempted to extinguish the flames. Bohrer was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died.

UC Berkeley officials are working with police to determine the circumstances surrounding Bohrer's death. The university has activated its Critical Incident Response Team to provide support to students, faculty, and staff who may have witnessed or been affected by the incident.

"We understand that this incident may raise concerns for our community members," said Bennett. "We want to assure everyone that the campus is safe and that there is no ongoing threat."
