2024 Belmont Stakes Moved to Saratoga Race Course

Historic Race to be Run in Upstate New York

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) announced on Monday the 2024 Belmont Stakes will be contested at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, June 8th.

The decision to move the race from Belmont Park was made by NYRA and Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI), the parent company of Belmont Park.

Belmont Park renovations underway

The move is necessary because Belmont Park is undergoing a major renovation project that is expected to be completed in 2025. The project includes the construction of a new grandstand, clubhouse, and track surface. The track will also be expanded, and the existing stabling area will be renovated.

The 2024 Belmont Stakes will be the first time the race has been run at Saratoga Race Course since 1890. The race was moved to Belmont Park in 1905.

NYRA President and CEO Dave O'Rourke said the move to Saratoga Race Course is a temporary one.

The Belmont Stakes is the third and final leg of the Triple Crown. The race is run at a distance of 1 1/2 miles and is open to three-year-old thoroughbreds.

Since its inception in 1867, the Belmont Stakes has been won by some of the greatest horses in history, including Secretariat, Man o' War, and Triple Crown winners Count Fleet, Assault, Citation, Whirlaway, and Seattle Slew.

This year's Belmont Stakes is expected to be one of the most competitive in recent memory. The field is expected to include Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike and Preakness Stakes winner Early Voting.

The 2024 Belmont Stakes will be a historic race. It will be the first time the race has been run at Saratoga Race Course in over a century, and it will be the first time the race has been run outside of New York City since 1884.
