The Plight of Youth NEETs: A Global Crisis

A Call to Action for International Organizations and Public Policymakers

Introduction

In the face of rising youth unemployment and underemployment, the issue of "NEETs" (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) has become an increasingly pressing concern.

NEETs face significant challenges in the labor market, with limited access to decent work and job opportunities. This has serious implications for their economic and social well-being, as well as for the broader economy and society.

The Global Youth NEET Problem

According to a recent study by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the global youth NEET rate stands at approximately 13%, representing over 267 million young people aged 15-24.

The problem is particularly acute in sub-Saharan Africa, where the youth NEET rate exceeds 25%. This region is also home to the highest number of youth NEETs in the world, with over 100 million young people falling into this category.

The Impact of Youth NEETs

Youth NEETs face a range of negative consequences, including:

  • Increased risk of poverty and social exclusion
  • Reduced opportunities for economic and social development
  • Increased likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors, such as crime and drug abuse

The presence of a large population of youth NEETs can also have a negative impact on the overall economy and society, by reducing productivity and innovation, and straining social services.

Call to Action

Addressing the issue of youth NEETs requires a concerted effort from international organizations, policymakers, and the public.

Policymakers should prioritize policies and programs aimed at reducing the number of youth NEETs, such as:

  • Investing in education and training to improve young people's skills and employability
  • Providing job creation programs and youth entrepreneurship support
  • Implementing social protection programs to support young people who are unemployed or underemployed

International organizations can play a vital role by:

  • Collecting and disseminating data on youth NEETs
  • Providing technical assistance to countries in developing and implementing youth employment policies
  • Advocating for the inclusion of youth NEETs in international development agendas

By working together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society where all young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
